What cupcake flavor (or combination of flavors) says “Thank You”?

My husband asked me to make cupcakes to give as “thank you” gifts but when I asked him what flavor he wanted, he just shrugged and said “I don’t know. Whatever flavor says thank you”.

Um. Ok husband. That was no help.

*rolling my eyes, having a hard time keeping them contained in my head*

That’s why I am posing the question to my readers.

Hey… Where you going?

Fine. I’ll even make it worth your while. (Sheesh! You all are so high maintenance.)

The most common question I get emailed is: where can I find those white cupcake liners that you use? So let’s turn this Cupcake Question into a giveaway. Every comment enters you in a random drawing to win 250 cupcake liners. I got your attention now huh?

What you waiting for? Help a clueless self-proclaimed cupcake-ista out!

Deadline: However long it takes for husband to pick flavor or Monday, February 16th @ 11:59pm EST. Whatever comes first. So get in while the gettings good!

Are cupcakes a fad or a timeless dessert?
Jennifer Lee from the New York Times poses a similar question to her readers.

(Thanks Stephanie for the article link!)

I had cupcakes at my wedding instead of a multi-tiered wedding cake. It was so much fun to see my guests getting down on the dance floor with champagne in one hand and cupcake in another. Best part? No ridiculous cake cutting fee! No fooling. There is really a “cake cutting fee”. Do vendors know how to gouge brides for every penny or what?

But I have always liked cupcakes since I was a little girl. I remember my mom making funfetti cupcakes for my birthday grades 1-6. It was such an honor to wear the “birthday crown” and hand out cupcakes to my classmates on the last day of school. (My birthday is in July so we always celebrated my birthday on the last day of school. What a gip! haha)

I guess I have to admit that I came down with the “cupcake fever” about 1 year ago as it was taking over the blogosphere and now its a full blown obsession. Do I think its a fad? I don’t think so. Maybe the nostalgia of paying 4 freaking dollars for 1 cupcake will start to get old (if it hasn’t already) in this economy but the concept of a cupcake, a portable bite size dessert as a vehicle for frosting, will be timeless for me.

Eek! I just realized that Cupcake Hero is due tomorrow! Where did this month go?

What flavors do you think of when you think of New Years Eve?

I am in charge of NYE cupcakes (derrr!) and to be honest I can’t really think of NYE flavors. Thanksgiving has pumpkin. Christmas has peppermint. What’s New Years?

Maybe… Champagne?

LOL.

Don’t you do liquid dinner for NYE too?

Just keeping it real folks.

This morning, I got an email…

Dear Cupcake Lovers,

It’s your chance to convert Grub Street from cupmudgeonism. Convince us why cupcakes are so fantastic by emailing your argument to grubstreet@nymag.com or leaving a comment on the blog for a chance to win a much coveted Magnolia Bakery t-shirt and bragging rights. But hurry, deadline is this evening!

Good luck!
Courtney

I assume it was a mass email to other cupcake bloggers b/c of the way it was addressed. Looks like cupcakes are under attack again! Why must I defend my cupcake love? Make cupcakes not war! HAHA. But I had to defend my honor right? So I decided to email her back with a little haiku.

Cake, sprinkles, frosting
Fits in the palm of your hand
Need I say much more?

So I’ll post the same question to my readers.

What would you say to a cupcake hater that asked you why you love cupcakes?

Think about it. Maybe you’ll win a tshirt.

Happy Halloween cupcake lovers (and haters)!

PS. I’ll be back later with my little friend, Nutella. Muhahaha…

Be honest. Do you sneak batter finger licks when you bake?

I admit it. I do. Actually I used to but now that I am baking like 2-3x a week those batter finger lick calories are adding up and I have my muffin top to prove it. Blah. But then a fellow cupcake-er told me her tip about chewing gum when she bakes. Let’s face it cake batter+spearmint=nasty so I find myself not sneaking licks anymore. Niiiiiice. Now I am curious. Do *YOU* have a batter licking prevention tip to share?

Happy Friday everyone.

Be good with a pinch of evil. Makes life more fun.

Is Sprinkles bullying copycat cupcakeries? (Read more about it here and here.)

A. Yes
B. No
C. It doesn’t matter. Cupcakes are so last year.

————————————————-

I vote Yes.

Sprinkles cupcakes (L) and Famous Cupcakes (R)

Don’t get me wrong. I like Sprinkles. I got a Sprinkles tshirt for my birthday and I get all happy whenever I wear it. (Thanks L!)

But I would have more sympathy if Famous Cupcakes specifically copied the “modern dot” which to me is Sprinkles’ signature. Rather Famous Cupcakes uses different shapes for different occasions. Are you telling me that Sprinkles has copyrights on any small fondant decor centered in the middle of a cupcake? What happened to friendly competition? Coke and Pepsi have practically the same soda formula (Pepsi has citric acid) but they coexist. (I prefer Coke but I have no idea why?)

I think someone is a little sue happy, no?

PS. If anyone answers “C”, your kind is not welcome here. Peace out. LOL

Schools across the US are banning cupcakes as a birthday treat, asking parents to send healthy “treats” or nothing at all.

Do you agree or disagree? Why?

To be honest… I am torn. I understand the concern about diabetes, allergies, obesity and sugar-induced-hyperactivity in children but when I was a child, some of my favorite memories were classmates’ birthdays b/c that meant one thing:

CUPCAKES CUPCAKES CUPCAKES!

The birthday boy/girl gets to be the star, passing out cupcakes and the rest of the class gets to eat the homemade cakey frosting goodness. Everyone wins, right?

*shrugs

I guess all I am saying is… I am glad I didn’t miss out on that childhood memory. And I turned out ok…ok… ok… [malfunction]

What is your first memory that involves a cupcake(s)?

If I close my eyes, the first thing that comes to mind is grade school birthday cupcakes. I always loved when it was someone’s birthday in grade school b/c moms would come with cupcakes for the whole class. They were never extravagantly decorated but at 5 years old, all I wanted was any flavor cupcake as long as there was lots of frosting and sprinkles! I guess things haven’t change much for me since that age huh? ;)

What time of the day do you like to eat a cupcake?

I usually crave a cupcake mid afternoon but there are really no rules for me. I’ve been known to eat a cupcake for breakfast or midnight snack too. ;)

What flavor should NOT be in a cupcake?

If you would have asked me before today I would have said bacon or some other fat dripping food product but I may have to change my mind after seeing fellow Daring Baker, Leah‘s blog and her Dorie Greenspan adapted perfect party “bacon” cake. Until I have time to test out her bacon-makes-everything-better theory maybe I’ll go with… fish?

Where is your favorite place to buy a cupcake?

Strangely it wasn’t until very recently that I had ever eaten a cupcake outside of my own kitchen. Sprinkles is a very well known cupcakery and has various locations in the US – they even have their own brand name cupcake mixes via Williams Sonoma. (Has anyone bought their mix? Any good? Worth the $14 price tag?) There’s also the Frosted Cupcakery that I recently tried their chocolate vanilla buttercream and my husband had red velvet with cream cheese (no surprise there!). I am sure there are other cupcakeries near me but those are the 2 I know of. While the cupcake was good, I guess in the end I just can’t justify paying $3/cupcake when I think the ones I make in my own kitchen are pretty darn good (and free… LOL). Just my 2¢.

What’s more important in cupcake, form or function (ie looks or taste)?

I think there’s a balance with form and function for me. You “eat” with your eyes first so it has to be appealing enough to take a bite but if its so elaborate you can’t eat or don’t want to eat it, whats the point IMO? Even though I can appreciate how elaborate and creative ppl are with their cupcake decorations, bottom line for me is the “eat-ability”.  It makes me kinda sad if ppl don’t eat my cupcakes…

Filling or no filling?

I tend to like filling but it kinda depends on what the filling is. I don’t usually like jam or jelly fillings though.  More creamy…think along the lines of twinkie or ding dong fillings. (Get your mind out of the gutter, NB!!)
